This programme is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills and competences required to work effectively as childcare educators in early childhood education and care settings. Developed in line with the National Occupational Standards issued by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), it covers child development, safeguarding, inclusive education, communication, health and safety, and play-based learning. Through theoretical learning, practical assessments and compulsory supervised placement, learners develop the skills needed to support children’s wellbeing, learning and holistic development in early years settings.
This programme is suitable for individuals aspiring to work as childcare educators in licensed early childhood education and care centres, as well as individuals already working in early years settings who wish to strengthen their knowledge, practical skills and professional qualifications.
Assessment combines theoretical, practical and reflective methods, including activity plans, reflective journals, case study analyses, practical demonstrations, written action plans and reflections, group reports and presentations, practice-based portfolios, role-play assessments and feedback. Each taught module is marked out of 100, with a pass mark of 50%. Where a module has written/in-class and practical components, both must be passed independently at 50%. The compulsory supervised placement is assessed on a pass/fail basis and must be successfully completed to obtain the qualification.
The qualification record specifies presential (face-to-face) delivery, with practical activities and compulsory supervised placement. The programme comprises 300 contact hours and 1,500 total learning hours.
